    Witch’s Cauldron

war, witch’s strange poisoned brew
what a horrible black broth of evil

gruel with bubbles of hate, malevolence

our long terrible war

victims scream a tragic song of loss, pain. disappointment
long dead ghosts speak loudour long terrible war
religious sects in ranks fight
ing street to street
so many souls killed
stores, shops, homes bombed
our long terrible war

within awful desert waste land

on frightful, choppy, dangerous seas

in foul confused airspace
our long terrible war

daily news spun of vague half-truths
belief, values, dead, wasted, unspoken
hope, honor, morale, spirit eclipsed
our long terrible war

brave troubled soldier’s return

many with confused, ugly
twisted
woeful injured bodies
our long terrible war

scheming and secrets must end
burn this country’s bloody coven
empty the fearsome battle cauldron
end our long terrible war

Fearsome Omen

Lost Souls

lost souls, minerals, metals, and mines remain
native american spirits
still haunt desert lands
signs of simple
strong people found in the desert
indian eradication
mock battles,
pilgrim's passages
mark this place
the desert allows
one to find roots, selves and souls

Obsolete

Time and age has shown me how many things
have become obsolete; riveted blue jeans,
hippies, yuppies, smoking, kilobits and megabytes.
Apple II computers, basic, DOS and diskettes
are sorely missed.

Now it's terabytes, the WEB and blogs.  Do we
absolutely need blogs?  "Giving back" to the
Internet is obsolete, as are sliderules,
engineering handbooks and design standards.

Old engineers and scientists are obsolete.
Now it's system programmers, Internet gurus,
and C++.  Saving for a rainy day is already
obsolete.  It appears that gas guzzlers,
multi-hundred horsepower, and diesel powered
cars are becoming obsolete, too.

Time and technology will make lots of us
obsolete too soon.

Obsolete 2

Naturally beautiful beaches, mountains and deserts
are being paved over.  Open spaces, salt marshes,
and small farms are being gobbled up for shopping malls, housing developments, and big box stores.  Leisure time, camping out in the wilds, and enjoying
a hike are being replaced with 70 or 80 hour work weeks, ulcers, heart attacks and mild insanity.

Obsolescence in fashion, in computer software and hardware, in automobiles and many other things has become the rule.  Large city parks, some state and federal campgrounds and reserves are now
obsolete. So many things have become too costly
to be maintained.  We all may become obsolete,
as is civilization, without living in harmony with
nature.  We must not let everything become
obsolete!

                   Home

Coyotes, bobcats, owls inhabit our minds and acres.
Who would ever think that oak and pine trees hide
wildlife and fulfill our dreams?  A house of a single
story with a below ground workshop holds happiness.

Front yard of daffodils in early spring, iris in later
times and filled with white blooms in summer,
becomes shade in the afternoon.  In a side yard,
live rocks, weeds and lizards.  On the other side, we
can park an RV, my truck or store our trash.

The rear garden is lush, part of the year with roses,
herbs and resplendent things.  A sun room looks over
the garden and opens to a wrap around, red wooden
deck.  Two other decks fill the skirts of our bedroom
and the guest room.  Decks provide peace, quiet,
privacy and serenity.

Great room, kitchen, study, laundry complete this
home’s picture.  Three acres of splendor.  Three acres
of beauty.  Three acres of woods, small varmints and
an infinity of birds.  Some
birds stay all year, some mate and make nests.  Still
other birds visit only if we put out seeds and water for them.

Our woodpeckers hammer away all year in our back
lot, old snag tree that has looked ready to fall over
since moving in.  Our great horned owl just passed on and
we have heard no replacement, so far.

Fall and winter bring small mule deer, buck, doe and
young.  End of summer we see Elk by the dozen.  Late in
the year we can see mountain lions, bear, and snow.
Cold, cold it gets in winter.  Ice, winds, sleet, hail, even
rain comes during our five month winters.  If we’re lucky,
we escape  for the winter to the desert of southern California.

Happy as a King

Today I'm truly happy as a king!
Gifts are bought and everything.

Christmas time, and the tree is sparkling!
All the colored tree lights are blinking!

The eggnog is warm and it's brimming
Over with the alcohol still steaming.

Christmas day will bring overwhelming
Joy, love, hope, happiness fit for a king!

Merry Christmas Harvey

Merry, merry christmas to my good friend.
Harvey you're a super guy, best wishes I send!

I hope good thoughts can cheer you.
It's terrible to to be stuck feeling blue.

Harvey my friend, get better soon.
Get well now, then we'll hit a saloon!

Spin

Spin, the latest twist on truth.
Just take it with vermouth.

Couch potatoes don't care,
What ever is on the air!

The prez, full of plain 'ol sin,
The media too, spread spin.

Just a new word for manipulation,
Does it really help our situation?

I don't care for spin,
Oh, what a state I'm in!

Sliderules (an old engineer's delight)

linear ones,
round some are,
short are some,
long be others,
watch-like are very few,
wood, steel, bamboo,
celluloid, plastic, ivory,
aluminum, and paper
powers them.
but, all can
calculate!

An Engineer was I

An engineer was I
Until that day,
My heart gave way.

An engineer was I
But, then I realized
That I almost died.

An engineer was I
That my expression
Gave way to passion.

An engineer was I
When poetry came
And became my game!

On Reading Frost

"Mending Wall," "A road not taken," and other classic
Frost poems, make me sincerely jealous of his great talents!
Here was a man who could write poetry that was so natural,
so lyrical, so full of imagery and meaning that he is still
absolutely
unexcelled!

His mastery of nature's descriptions and his ability to convey
the feeling that you are standing there with him, is just amazing!
I could try to imitate him, but I know know these pure look-alikes
or sound-alikes would not ring true.

While not my absolute favorite poet, Mr. Robert Frost was a
master craftsman, an accomplished artist and a great creative
human being.  He brought the English speaking world a
new sense of belonging to nature and being an intimate part of it, as well.

I've studied his poetry structures and use of rhyme,
but, all I find is near perfect use of bits of his unique artistic style.
Frost used his skills not only wisely, but with utter perfection!
I really do wonder if he ever got a rejection?
